How dangerous is eating while driving?

On Behalf of | Jun 11, 2021 | car accidents | 0 comments

There are many things which lead to distracted driving. Many people believe that distracted driving limits itself to cell phone use while behind the wheel, but this is not true. Anything that takes your attention away from the road is a form of distraction, and this includes food.

Eating while driving is extraordinarily common. In fact, it may be more common than inappropriate cell phone use while driving. Even though this is a very common form of distracted driving, it is very dangerous. According to Decide to Drive, if you eat while operating a motor vehicle, your risk of getting in a crash nearly doubles.

What are the most dangerous foods?

There are some food items which are more commonly associated with car crashes than others. Types of food and beverage frequently found at crash sites include powdered donuts, coffee, hamburgers, soups, tacos and chili.

However, keep in mind that these are mostly finger foods and readily available at drive-thru restaurants. Eating filet mignon behind the wheel is no safer than reaching for a donut.

What are some ways to prevent eating and driving?

Many Americans eat behind the wheel as they are driving to work. In most cases, if you set your alarm for 10 minutes earlier, it is more likely that you will be able to eat safely at your kitchen table as opposed to trying to eat breakfast during the morning rush hour.

If you are going on a long road trip, consider packing a picnic lunch and eating it at highway rest stops. Not only will this prevent you from eating fast food while driving, the food will likely also be cheaper and healthier. Usually, with a little planning, you can prevent eating while driving.
