Tips to stay safe on the road at night

On Behalf of | Feb 11, 2022 | blog, car accidents, Injuries | 0 comments

Driving at night comes with additional risks and hazards that we do not have to deal with during daylight hours.

Taking steps to keep yourself safer on the roads at night can help you avoid costly and painful collisions.

Fight drowsiness

Staying alert helps you notice and react to hazards that could cause accidents. Take steps to keep yourself awake and alert. Drink coffee or another caffeinated beverage that works for you. Play upbeat music or listen to an interesting podcast to keep yourself engaged so that you do not zone out. If you have a passenger, ask them to keep you talking.

Use high beams

When you drive on roads without many other vehicles at night, the darkness can be overwhelming. Use your high beam lights to give yourself a better look at your surroundings and the road in front of you. Make sure to turn off your high beams for oncoming traffic so that you do not blind other drivers.

Keep your windshield clean

In the dark, smudges and fingerprints on windows can impair your vision when hit by the lights of oncoming cars. They can blur and distort your vision as the car moves past you. Keep your windshield as clean as possible when driving at night. Remember to clean both the inside and outside of your windshield.

If you drive through rural areas at night, animals in the road are a common problem. Following these tips will make it easier for you to spot animals and avoid hitting them.
