Brain injuries have a long-term impact

On Behalf of | Jul 30, 2021 | blog, brain injury | 0 comments

After a loved one incurs a brain injury, many people may expect that this person will recover over time. However, a brain injury can have a long-lasting impact.

Many people may not realize that a brain injury affects patients for the rest of their lives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people usually have additional health problems after sustaining a brain injury. One study found that about 57% of people become disabled, while 50% need further hospitalization. Additionally, about 55% of workers cannot return to their jobs. In some situations, people cannot live in their homes and about 12% of patients have to live in a nursing home.

Cognitive changes

After sustaining a brain injury, people may sometimes experience cognitive impairment. Brainline says that traumatic brain injuries can make some patients unable to remember new information. People may also have problems focusing or understanding what other people say to them. These cognitive changes can impact the way that people speak. Some patients have trouble putting sentences together or they may experience slurred speech. Additionally, some people have difficulty understanding written material.

A brain injury can also cause people to lose their ability to gauge pressure and temperature. People may touch a hot surface and fail to realize how hot it is. They also may not understand where their arms and legs are in relation to the rest of their body.

Sensory changes

A brain injury can also impact a person’s senses.  Some people may become sensitive to certain sounds or they may experience ringing in their ears. Some patients may be unable to judge distance. Their vision may be blurry or they may lose some of their eyesight. In some situations, people may lose their sense of smell.

When an accident causes a traumatic brain injury, people may be able to file a claim so that they can afford the care that their loved ones need.
